Where to Find Good Quality Gin ?

Postby kuzukuzu on Thu Jan 28, 2010 9:05 pm

I'm trying to find good gin in Vilnius (old town specifically). The stuff I found in Maxima/Rimi is pretty cheap and noxious, but I haven't seen any dedicated liquor stores as such. Any suggestions ?

Apologies for the random question..

KuzuKuzu:

Why would you buy Gin in Lithuania? I would think that you would be more successful with Vodka in this part of the world. I am no expert on this stuff, but if you have your heart set on good quality alcohol, I know of two liquor stores which can probably help.

One is a shop which specializes in Cognac. I assume they would also know something about Gin. This shop is on Etmonu g, around the corner from the SAS Raddison hotel (direction..Gates of Dawn). The other liquor store is near Gedimino, next to Sue's Indian restaurant and Zoe's restaurant. I am sure that there are more liquor stores, but since I mostly drink beer, I don't go to too many.

Good luck!

Oh without doubt I am absorbing the local flavour, but absence makes the heart grow fonder and all that... ;)

Anyway I managed to find the good stuff in the gedimino 9 Rimi - which in hindsight should have been an obvious place to check. I appreciate the input nonetheless.

There is alot of local flavor to be had here. For example, have you noticed the high quality of restaurant food and the low cost? I have traveled all over the world and rarely have I found such almost consistently good food. And the prices are amazing. You can have an entire meal here with a beer for the same price of a beer only in France or Swizterland and the quality is SO much higher too. Enjoy it while you can.

Yep! I've been saying the exact same thing!

Puts my hometown (Brisbane) to shame.

Puts nearly everyone's hometown to shame. I wonder how they get it right so often?

Strangely, when we got here we used to comment that the food was so good and the service was so bad....however maybe it is our imagination but even the service seems to be getting better.

To be honest with you Gene, I still haven't experienced one tenth of the culinary options Vilnius has to offer! But what I have tried so far has been fantastic and exceptional value.

Also I'm thinking of trying Čingischanas on Basanavičiaus st - it's a central asian restaurant that's supposed to be quite good. Have you tried this or know anything about it? Primary reason for going here is that I've no idea what on earth this kind of cuisine is - so should be quite an experience. :D
