Setting up business - anybody know an accountant ?

Postby stigv on Wed Sep 16, 2009 11:07 pm

Hello,

I currently have my own small IT company in western Europe - and considering to use Lithuania as base for various contracts thoughout Europe. Intend to live as much as possible in Lithuania - but with all sources of income from contracts in various other countries. Just looking for a trustworthy accountant to handle the authorities, tax stuff and around 12-14 invoices pr. year. I'm not looking for an international accounting office trying to sell my all kinds of services.

I'll check up on this group to check things. Otherwise drop an email on stigv (at) hotmail.com

best regards

Hi Stig, If you are at the point where you are on this Forum looking for an accountant, then you should probably forget your idea. The mere fact that you are asking for an accountant on this forum means you do not speak Lithuanian or have a trustworthy Lithuanian friend. In fact, the words trustworthy and Lithuanian are difficult to put in an honest sentence together. The market here is flooded with about anything you can think of. This is not an ignorant stupid country. It is a greedy discriminative one. They know how to take advantage of you already.

I do not agree with this. We actually have a good and competent accountant. I did not recommend her, because she does not work in English. But after two years of working with her, we have been satisfied. We have also used the services of several attorneys and, in general have been statisfied with their services. On the otherhand, I have had TERRIBLE experiences with both accountants and attornies in western countries, including USA, Switzerland and The Netherlands. Our experiencs with professionals in Lithuania, once we have agreed on a pricing and have negotiated a fair agreement (in English and Lithuanian) has been good in general. But do not accept the first offer. Some attorneys and accountants have very high prices for working with foreigners. Some of it is justified because agreements and such are in two languages, so it is more work for them. But most of it is not.

As an example, some accountants will have a reasonable rate for monthly work, but the rate will cover only 10 invoices. Every invoice after the minimum will cost 20-50lta each. So, shop around before choosing and make sure to read the fine print on the agreement before signing.
